It is the birthplace of 20th century author Cesare Pavese. On its hill are a medieval castle and a Benedictine convent, most likely built on the ruins of a temple of Jupiter. The village of Santo Stefano Belbo of medieval origin stands between the Langhe hills. Around 1300 it was first a fief of the Marquises of Monferrato, then the Marchesi of Saluzzo,and then the family of Scarampi. The land was often a conflict as a demonstration of the ancient medieval tower, destroyed in the war between Spain and Austria in 1600.
